What better
way to say "Happy St
Patrick's Day" than in the Irish language itself:
Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh?
Do you know what
you get when you cross poison ivy with a four leaf clover? I didn't
think so. I will tell you later. I want to give you time to goggle it
if you desire.
That is my
closest blush at a different language
and I even copied from the Internet. That's
a lie, I did get the drift of Vietnamese at one time. By
the way, just why is it that we can't seem to bring ourselves to
declare English to be the official language of the United States?
Have never understood that.
Well, happy
Tuesday. Glad to see everyone could show up for the weekly meeting of
those who are not quite on an even keel. Our numbers continue to
grow. I don't feel quite as alone as I once did.
Continuing
on with the look back at 1964, here is the list of the Top 10 for
this week. Only 4 of the songs are by the Beatles. Wish they
had been denied a passport
at times although
their influence changed the course of music for decades.
1.
She Loves You by the
Beatles2. I
Want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles3.
Please Please Me by the
Beatles4. Dawn
(Go Away) by the 4 Seasons5.
Fun, Fun, Fun by the Beach
Boys6. Navy
Blue by Diane Renay7.
Twist and Shout by the

by Al Hirt9. I
Love You More and More Every Day by Al Martino10.
Hello, Dolly! by Louis
Armstrong
It
has really been a hoot living the year of 1964 all over again. I have
a copy of our local newspaper from March 1964. It was titled, “The
Minburn Booster”. Its
byline was “News from the Minburn Community.... A Small Town With A
Big Heart”. It was and is a town with a big heart. A great place.
In Volume 10 Number 19. I see a Vaccine Clinic was set for March 24.
It was for the Sabin Oral Polio Vaccine sponsored by the American
Legion. There were columns such as “With The Sick”, “Hello
World”, Notes From The Superintendent” (I was not mentioned,
Whew!), there was the “Calendar Girl For March”. It was one of my
good friends and still is. Ironically, the “Senior of the Week”
happened to be a classmate who passed away only a couple of weeks
ago. A really sad coincidence. There
was a section reserved for school news called “The Student
Chit-Chat” where the big news was a toss-up between the naming of
the Year Book Queen and “Meet the Janitors”. But what really
caught my eye was
some of the grocery prices quoted in Shaw's ByLo grocery store ad.
Sit down now, this is shocking.
Wishbone
Italian Dressing – 8 oz. 33 cents or 2 for 63 cents.
Kleenex 400 count – 19 cents.
Bacon – 2 lbs – 79 cents
Ground Beef – 2 lbs. - 97 cents
or a Frigidaire 2 door with freezer on top regularly $349.95 but on sale for #249.95 with trade at Rohner's.

Wow!!!!!! Enough is enough..... I'm feeling ill. Beam be back Scotty!
OK,
friends enough of the small town nostalgia, get those shoes off, line
them up neatly and let's get this hop a – hoppin'. Before we start,
I have an announcement from the Superintendent. Apparently, at last
month's dance, a person or persons enhanced the two punch bowls with
an unknown ingredient which caused several headaches the next
morning. The Superintendent went on to say that he missed church
because of a throbbing headache and upset stomach. There have been no
leads as
to who the culprits were but he
has some ideas. If it happens again, he will cancel the rest of
scheduled sock hops. There you have it. Tonight we have Danny the
Diskman spinning the 45's. Danny let's get started with “Twist and
Shout” by the Beatles. Everyone get out there now.
Deciding
what to write about each week is a challenge. You know that. This
week it occurred to me that once we reach adolescence our lives
evolve through
three
stages – idealism, realism, pessimism. The
change from one stage is an individual thing. For example, I was
pretty much filled with idealism from age 14 through 40. Realism
struck me at age 40 and I couldn't shake it until I retired at 62.
Since age 62 it has been all pessimism but now at 68 I am seeing some
indications of idealism sneaking back into my subconscious.
Through-out my life, regardless of my life stage, I have been
curious. Yesterday, for instance, I wondered just why it was that a
man's shirt buttons one way and women's blouse the opposite way.
Never understood why that was necessary. I'm open to reasonable
explanations.
We
know a couple Ralph and Edna. We've been friends for years. Well,
Ralph
and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they
were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped
into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed
there.
Edna
promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him
out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act,
she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as
she now considered her to be mentally stable.
When
she went to tell Edna the news she said, “Edna, I have good news
and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged, since you
were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving
the life of the person you love. I have concluded that your act
displays sound mindedness.”
She
continued, “The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom
with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but
he's dead.” Edna replied, “He didn't hang himself. I put him
there to dry.... How soon can I go home?”
Happy
Mental Health Day! You
can do your bit by remembering to send an email to an unstable
friend....I've Done my part!!! Thanks
to Cheryl for sharing this with me. What else are friends for?
Enough,
French Roast is gone and my editors have already inflicted one lump
on my head. TA!
