I had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: - 'No good in a bed, but fine against a wall.' - Eleanor Roosevelt
Once again we meet fellow Drivellers. I trust your week was a great one. Spring/summer has surely sprung. Feels so good to wear shorts again. I have 2 styles of clothes that I wear; sweatpants and t-shirts in winter and shorts and t-shirt in the summer. Should I need to dress up for something, I put a clean pair of shorts on or put a little crease in my sweatpants. That is all you are getting from this guy.
I tried to be normal once. Worse two minutes of my life.
More importantly, I feel a person's ability to wonder about things is our most important characteristic. If you think about it, we would still be in the stone ages at best if we didn't wonder about things around us. Asking “How does this work?”; “I wonder why ….”; “Where does this come from?” I wonder all the time about all sorts of things. You may have caught that in my past blogs. As I was writing this, I began wondering why many books run 8 to 10 inches tall. Who decided this was a good size. Did the bookcase dictate the size or was it a result of the book?” You see, once you begin asking a question others spring up. Quite fascinating really.
My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance to idiots that needs work.
This week I have been reflecting once again on the Vietnam experience. What else is new you say? Well last week was the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. Ever wonder what happened to those Vietnamese we left behind? You know the ARVN, the sympathizers and such. Well many were given the chance to be shipped off to “re-education” camps. The rest – dead. Many of us don't realize this. Just how proud does that make us feel? There is a song that asks the question; “Who will stop the rain”. The lyrics are these:
Long as I remember the rain been comin' down
Clouds of mystery pourin' confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages tryin' to find the sun.
And I wonder still I wonder who'll stop the rain.
I went down Virginia seekin' shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable I watched the tower grow
Five year plans and new deals wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder still I wonder who'll stop the rain.
Heard the singers playin', how we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together tryin' to keep warm.
Still the rain kept pourin', fallin' on my ears
And I wonder, still I wonder who'll stop the rain.
Still I wonder who will stop the rain in my heart? John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival, 1970. Some say it was a Vietnam protest song but it seems much more intricate than that.
The new in-laws were in town yesterday for a meeting. My current wife, not having enough on her plate, decided a late afternoon BBQ was in order. Sven and Svenette (Jenny, the elder), and the in-laws were invited. Now let me set this table a little more plainly. Sue had a funeral luncheon to prepare for, a newsletter due, various bookkeeping and preparatory items for her next meetings on her plate. I was to BBQ mixed vegetables first. I had not anticipated we would be frying up 5 lbs. worth. After half an hour, the chill was just getting off of those things. Timeline is skewed now; everyone had arrived. Being an equal opportunity host, I asked Sven to take a peek. Instantly, he pointed out that I was out of propane. Off he goes to get the tank refilled. Though I didn't feel well with this throat thingie, I went inside and danced the old soft shoe and sang a lick to pass the time. Like a flash Sven was back, grill is going with all 4 burners blazing. I throw the burgers on. Went to flip the burgers. They were stuck like attached with super glue. I dealt with that. The turkey burgers? Disaster!! Hot Dogs – Excellent. We ate and everyone was complimentary but in my mind it was the worst attempt I have ever made. My apologies one and all.
Before you give someone a piece of your mind, make sure you can spare it. Personally, I have determined that it is one thing I can't spare, secondly – I am old, thirdly – I am short and lastly – I don't run very fast anymore.
But a wise person once said. You know that “wise person” we all quote. I would sure like to meet him. Anyway, he once said five things.
1. We all love to spend money buying new clothes but we never realize that the best moments in life are enjoyed without clothes.
2. Having a cold drink on hot day with a few friends is nice, but having a hot friend on a cold night after a few drinks – PRICELESS.
3. Breaking News: Condoms don't guarantee safe sex anymore. A friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot dead by the woman's husband.
4. Arguing over a girl's bust size is like choosing between Molson, Heineken, Carlsberg, & Budweiser. Men may state their preferences, but will grab whatever is available.
AND
5. I haven't verified this on Snopes, but it sounds legit. A recent study found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it.
One of the greatest things I taught my daugthers was how to shoot a weapon. My reasoning simply was that a restraining order is just a piece of paper. Fortunately, they have not had to use this skill.
Here's to all the people who remain unharmed because I have coffee and a sense of humor. I didn't think I would see the day when French Roast didn't taste good. Well I have seen the day. My taste buds have shut off. Nothing tastes right. Remember, there is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as a public service. Now, until we meet again. -TA!
