Just Wondering!
I had a moment of Da ja vu this morning. I went into the bathroom for the “morning constitutional”. While I am sitting there, getting my bearings and trying to figure out what day it was, the toilet begins to flush. Whoa! What's that? Immediately the “drip to remodel” episode floods my memory. No, no, no not again. I will not remodel the bathroom again. I did my business and proceeded to forget about it. That way it is sure to go away.
Oh, you are probably wondering who that handsome dude is in the photo. You usually see me all scrubbed up and clean with Barney the Pugwriter. Since we are close to Halloween, I was inspired to give you a glimpse of what I really look like on a normal day. I don't usually smile too much and you can probably see why. I swear I am going to the dentist soon. “Sue, how many years have I been saying that? About 15 years or so.” Okay. Many of you, of course, knew I was in the US Air Force a while back. I just got used to wearing the goggles and helmet. It is a habit now and I just can't seem to break the habit. Anyway, it's good to see you all.
Have you got your Halloween plans all made? Do you give out candy or do you still Trick or Treat? If the weather is rather iffy, I will have my current wife, Sue, stand guard by the door and hand out candy. I will get duded up grab a Hy-Vee plastic bag and hit the sidewalks. I will probably go to the other side of town. I haven't been over there for a few years and people won't remember me. There are some advantages to being vertically challenged and this is one of them. I usually can get enough candy to supply our give away at home for the next year. Giving forward, I call it.
We had our “trunk n treat” activity Sunday night at church. The congregation pulls their cars into the parking lot, open the trunk, decorate it and dispense goody treats to the youngsters that wander through. For old farts like us it is a relatively painless way to put a smile on people's faces. Boy, some of the costumes these kids have are really great. Being a nice night and all, we had a really good turnout, around 300 or so I think. That just kind of gets me juiced up for the real thing later this week. We have been doing this for quite a number of years and the numbers just keep growing. As it turned out for one of our members the night wasn't totally a success. Traditionally, after all the treats are gone, we have pizza delivered, go inside, warm up, enjoy each other's company, and feast on the pizza. One of our members though had a vehicle with some sort of hiccups, I guess. As we were walking across the parking lot, their horn starts beeping as though it was being broken into. Not a soul around it that we could see at least. They used their key and shut it off. We walked further and it went off again. By the time we got into the church it had gone off a half dozen times. Even while we were inside it went off a few more times. Needless, to say they ate rather quickly and left. Haven't heard yet how they slept or if the horn went off in the garage. I wonder if it got haunted in some way?
I went to the store shortly after noon today. I hadn't eaten yet so I got a little something at the deli, sat down fairly close to the TV and began eating. I begin people watching as I eat. It is always fun to watch people and make up stories about why they are there today at that moment. I noticed an elderly lady sitting in the corner, just under the TV. She had her walker parked right close. I had seen her in there before. It looked as though she had eaten as she was kind of slouched sideways in the corner of the booth. I paid her no mind and went about watching others and eating, of course. After a while the crowd thinned a bit. My eyes fell upon this lady again. This time I looked a little closer and doggone it, her eyes were closed. I start making a little story in my mind about how tired she must be with the walker and all. Next thing I know, I'm wondering if she died. I looked back at her quickly and I must apologize, I stared at her for a while. Every tick of the clock made me think she had died. After what seemed like an hour or so, in my mind (probably only a few seconds in real time) I saw her open her eyes just a little. Whew, she's alive I shouted in my mind. I am now wondering if she does that every day. If the Hy-Vee cafeteria her place for an afternoon nap each day? I don't know. I may have to go back tomorrow to see.
How you doing with your open enrollment. Do you have your health insurance taken care of for 2014? We don't. We have to switch from a company sponsored health plan for retirees to individual supplemental or advantage plans. Next week we have a teleconference with the representative doing the conversion for the company. I really hope it goes well. I have been researching all that I can research. This outfit has a prescription drug profiler which is supposed to help you get an idea what your out of pocket costs will be with various plans. I don't think it is quite correct on some things. It has my “out of pocket” cost being somewhere between $9,000 and $104,000 per year. Never gonna happen. They don't know I get $4.00 prescriptions at Hy-Vee and a bunch more from the VA for free. Anyway, I hope it works out and doesn't cost us a bunch more. Fingers crossed.
My paper seems to be getting filled, French Roast is almost gone so that must be the sign for me to shut her down for this week. It really is invigorating this time of the year. I look around and see a bunch of leaves in different shades of the color 9. How great is that? Until I come around again. Living in the '60's and lovin' it!----TA
