I was somewhat dismayed this morning. Dutifully I went about my Tuesday early morning duties of collecting the trash and recyclables. As the weather has turned colder, I have given up wearing my comfy shorts when taking out the trash. Instead, I have gone to my sweatpants and hooded sweatshirt. That pretty much sets my mood on Tuesday. I hate it. One little thing I have clung to is wearing my flip flops out but today was pushing it a little bit. We had a little surprise freezing rain overnight followed by a good dusting of light snow. Ugh! This could have been the last day for the flip flops but I hope not. I don't want to give in to winter too easily.
The saga of the ills of the current wife continues. You may remember that she has been suffering from a lower back pain which radiates down her legs with partial numbness in the legs and knees that are hurting. Pretty much from the waist down she has turned into junk. Yesterday was a day of enlightenment for us however. We went to an orthopedist who took some x-rays and did an examine. Seems as though she does have a pain in the rear which, as it turns out, is not me. Whew! I knew it would be good news. Instead he explained the obvious, arthritis in the knees and the not so obvious, spondylolisthesis in her lower spine. Briefly stated, she has a vertebra that gets misaligned and pinches a nerve. She also has a congenital defect in that area where a vertebra didn't fuse together completely. What a relief, I thought she have to be put down like a lame horse but the doc charted a different course of physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medicine. She thought that was a much better treatment path. She will be out of Silver Sneakers for a while.
Word of the Week - collop
I was reminded this morning when I returned home about just how many people misuse their handicap parking sign. Clearly printed on this placard is that it must be hung from the mirror ONLY when parked. It must be removed when you are driving. It is a danger to have this big thing swinging back and forth as you drive. Since they obviously have an impairment of some kind, they should not be adding another one. It is dangerous and one of my biggest pet peeves.
A friend of my from down south sent me an email that I thought was kind of cute and thought I would share.
He compiled a listing of short books that can easily be read quickly. I have included a few for you.
THINGS I LOVE ABOUT MY COUNTRY By Jane Fonda & Cindy Sheehan ; Illustrated by Michael Moore; Foreword by George Soros
THINGS I CANNOT AFFORD By Bill Gates
THINGS I WOULD NOT DO FOR MONEY By Dennis Rodman
THINGS WE KNOW TO BE TRUE By Al Gore & John Kerry
MY PLAN TO FIND THE REAL KILLERS By O. J. Simpson
HOW TO DRINK & DRIVE SAFELY By Ted Kennedy
HOW TO WIN A SUPERBOWL BY THE DETROIT LIONS
MY COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF MILITARY STRATEGY By Nancy Pelosi
And the shortest book of them all...
THINGS I DID TO DESERVE THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE by Barack Obama
Kind of funny, don't you think? I went to Kohl's yesterday to shop a little. I don't get there all that often and was reminded of why I don't go there more frequently. The Kohl's shoppers are dangerous. They get one of these small modified shopping carts and off they go. They know exactly what they want and where it is at. They do not yield to anyone, especially newbie shoppers. They push those carts around with wild abandon. I made the mistake of stopping to look at a display in the center of the aisle. Along comes a grandma going a good 30 mph down the aisle, she hits me and knocks me into a display of women's bras. To say I was embarrassed is putting it mildly. I get up with a D cup covering one eye and another fuchsia colored bra dangling from an ear. The cart hit and run speeder never even stopped. There should be a law or something. Fortunately, I wasn't hurt except for my pride.
We are closing the Grandpaw Bailey Fitness Center and Spa from Dec. 16 through Jan. 3. I wanted the staff to enjoy the Christmas season and this was my present to them this year. They can enjoy their family and friends without worrying about having to work. I am looking forward to some quiet time also. This year has been a busy one and I feel blessed to have had this experience. I am looking forward to next year. Of course, the Grand dogs, Barney, Max and Kinnick will be here for Christmas day. They are a hoot opening presents. Kinnick especially gets into the opening thing. That reminds me, I have to finish getting the tree up and decorated. Just a busy time of the year for us. Tomorrow, we get a bedroom window installed. Can't wait. No more snow wafting across my face. It will be a big improvement. Once done we have only the kitchen window and dining room to replace. Maybe next year for those.
Some of you may have realized by now that I have a thing for dogs. I have been trying to figure out how to help dogs. There are all sorts of volunteer opportunities but I can't decide what would be best. Fostering might be a possibility or helping a rescue organization. Just don't know what to do.
Word of the Week - collop - For lunch I had a light meal with some fruit, a collop of ham and a piece of cheese. Got it figured out? Okay, the definition I have is "A small slice of meat."
The French Roast is long gone. The coffee buzz is gone. Mailman and trash pickup guy haven't been here yet. Light snow still falling. Have I mentioned just how much I hate Iowa winters? My current wife, Sue, seems more relaxed today. Her pain is easing and I think she is relieved that her pain was not all in her mind. Maybe I won't get yelled at so much now. Until we meet again - TA!
